Report Department of Accountancy 2016-17

Accountancy is one of the integral courses in Bachelor Degree in Commerce. It is widespread and has created a vast scope to its beneficiaries. It is at the core of finance and thus requires regular updating to meet the current needs of the industry. The main objective of Accountancy Department is to provide strong foundation of Accounting knowledge and skills among students and to inculcate Professional values and the spirit of self development among students.

The department of accountancy is actively engaged in organizing the various activities for students, teachers as well as society. The department is empowered with highly competent and professional teaching faculty and has maintained high academic standards to enrich the personality of the students.

In an endeavour to bring some change in the examination and evaluation system Mumbai University has announced in 2016-17, B.Com 3years integrated programme- six semester course structures. This is the first time that Choice based Credit Grading and Semester system has been introduced. The major changes which University of Mumbai has introduced are going to keep students and teachers always on its toes. So it is a great challenge for teachers to equip themselves and prepare students to face examination right from F.Y.B.Com level. Keeping this in mind, Department of Accountancy organised a one day workshop on “Revised Syllabus of F.Y.B.Com Semester I – Semester II” on 25th July 2016 jointly with Board of Studies, Accountancy, University of Mumbai.

The workshop was inaugurated at the hands of chief guest Shri. Shashikant Desai, Former Member, Board of Studies, University of Mumbai & Former Head, Department of Accountancy, Chetna College of Commerce and Prof. Wadekar, Former Head, Department of Accountancy, Raheja College, Santacruz. Guest of Honour was Shri. Rohidasji Patil, Chairman. S.N. Education Trust and Shri. Mahesh Mhatre, Secretary, S.N. EducationTrust. The inaugural address saw good ramification in the words of Shri. Shashikant Desai, Former Member, Board of Studies, University of Mumbai. He emphasized the need to have good syllabus for commerce graduates.

There were two Technical Session of the workshop

Technical Session I Revised syllabus and new Paper Pattern on Semester – I was conducted Conference Room at M.B.A Building by Resource Person – CA Dr. Jayant Apte , Member, Board of Studies, Accountancy, University of Mumbai and Vice Principal, Ghanshyamdas Saraf College, Malad. In this Technical Session Revised Syllabus of F.Y.B.Com Sem – I was explained in detail by CA Dr. Jayant Apte. He has highlighted new structure of course and elaborated classification of courses as Elective, ability Enhancement and Core course. He stressed on new changes brought by University of Mumbai from Academic Year 2016-17.

  • Internal assessment of 25marks was discontinued for the conventional course of B.Com/ B.A.

  • External exam of 100 marks introduced for F.Y.Bcom.

  • Common Question paper to be set by Board of Studies, Universitry of Mumbai.

Question paper pattern for Accountancy subject was also discussed. The session led a fruitful explanation, interaction and discussion with the participants.

Technical Session II was conducted on Revised syllabus and new Paper Pattern on Semester – II by Resource Person – CA Dr. Minaxi Rachchh, Head, Department of Accountancy, ICLES Motilal Jhunjhunwala College, Vashi. Modules of Semester II of F.Y.B.Com in revised syllabus were discussed in detail. CA Dr. Minaxi Rachchh elaborated changes which are brought for 2016-17. Accounting with the use of accounting software was removed in the revised syllabus and new topic ‘Fire Insurance Claim’ was introduced from academic year 2016-17.

The one day workshop was successful with 116 participants from different colleges affiliated to University of Mumbai out of which 67 participants were for Accountancy subject. Teachers cleared their doubts regarding Revised Syllabus and Examination pattern as there were many Fresh and Young teachers who have entered in teaching profession recently. The workshops aimed at assembly of teachers and experts and had a good interaction and discussion on revised syllabus.

Department of Accountancy and Library had jointly organised an exhibition cum sale of books on subject – Financial Accountancy, Costing, Auditing, Taxation and Commerce in auditorium on 25th July 2016. Teachers availed this opportunity to increase their reservoir of personal as well as college books.

Department of Accountancy took the to motivate students and teachers to participate in the National Accounting Talent Search 2016-17, a nation wide accounting knowledge competition organised by Indian Accounting Association(IAA). IAA is a premier Professional body of accounting academicians and professionals in the country. Many students from B.com, BAF, BBI, BMS and BFM participated in this examination. It was an effort by the Department to bring research culture among the students and to make them capable to face global challenges in the fields of accountancy confidently and to produce competent accountant capable of making a positive contribution to the society in which they work.

“When work is pleasure, perfection is output.” The Department of Accountancy sincerely acknowledges the immense contribution and active co-operation of Management, Principal, teaching and non-teaching staff, Board of Studies, Accountancy, University of Mumbai and untiring efforts of students and the team of Accountancy department.
